Getting Website Traffic
You have finally finished building what you feel is the greatest website since ‘sliced bread’ and you have it all set up on the internet. You have your domain name registered, your hosting service is in place and you know the content is ‘killer’. Now what you need to do is to get people to see this fantastic website you have created. What you need is website traffic and getting that traffic is not always an easy task.
There are several ways that you can draw traffic to your website. Some are free and some can cost a little—or a lot—of money. As mentioned, getting people to view your website is not an easy task or one that is set up overnight. It can take a lot of work, but in the end it can definitely be worth the trouble. Getting a lot of traffic to your website can really send your income soaring. A lot of traffic means a lot of customers.
The first thing that needs to happen to get traffic to your website is that you need to be listed on the search engines. There are thousands of search engines on the web, and of course you probably already know of Google, Yahoo and MSN as being among the most popular. You can submit your site to these search engines yourself, but it can take a lot of time to submit to all of the others individually.
There are many businesses on the web that will submit to many of the search engines for you for a fee. This may be a better way to go, because not only is your time involved in submitting to the various search engines, but also the time is usually cut down for the search engines to add you to their lists when an agency submits them for you. Without an agency to act as your submitting agent, it can often take a couple of months before you are added to some of the search engines. Most agencies take pride in cutting down this time factor for you.
Besides getting listed on the search engines to help you get traffic, you can also advertise to let people know about your website. One way to advertise is to buy pay-per-click ads. What happens is that you enter the keywords that you feel are most appropriate to your website and enter in what you are willing to pay for each keyword. When a person searches the internet for that keyword, your ad is displayed. If the person likes the sound of your ad, they will click on it and be directed to your website. You do not pay if the person does not click on your ad.
There are pros and cons to this type of advertising. It is good in that it is directly targeted to the theme of your website. But, you may also have a lot of competition for particular keywords. And, some of the main keywords that you may feel are most appropriate can cost a lot. You should be prepared to do a little testing to see which keywords work the best and cost the least.
Another way to attract traffic to your website initially is to prepare and submit press releases. Again there are free sites where you can submit press releases, and there are ones that you can pay for that will submit your press release to a wider audience. Press release let the people on the web know that you have a new website or product available.
One of the best ways to draw more traffic to your website is to write articles on your website topic. You can then submit the articles to article or content websites with a link to your website. The people reading your articles can follow the link back to your website, hopefully to become a customer.
You can also join traffic exchanges. In many of these exchanges you surf other web owners’ ads and they are directed to view yours. Many of these traffic exchanges are free to join and you can get the ad for your website seen by many viewers. The drawback may be that these viewers are not necessarily targeted traffic that is interested in your theme or niche (depending what your website is all about). Another drawback to this idea is that, although it is free, it can be very time-consuming.
Another idea is to buy ads on other websites. You can pay for banners or text ads to appear on like-minded websites. This may be a little more costly, but may also put your website in view of a lot of people depending on the sites you choose to advertise on.
Getting website traffic to view your website can involve a lot of time and energy. In the end, though, getting traffic to your website is a worthwhile endeavor. The more traffic you get, the more likely that a customer will take advantage of your offer or service.
