A Website About What?
Everyone has to make a living. In today’s world, it is either get a typical job or be in business for yourself. That is where the internet can be a great boon to many. The appeal of working from home and being your own boss is very exciting. Just imagine running your own website where you can spend minutes per day on your computer and rake in the dough. Well sorry to burst your bubble, but it is not as easy as all that. There are many ways to make a living with the net, but you also need to work to get it going.
One of the favorite ways that you can make money with your computer is by starting your own website. With that website there are various ways to create income. You can earn money on advertising. You can sell your own or other people’s products. You can sell services. Or perhaps you can make money with a related newsletter or subscription program.
When you do consider starting your own website to (hopefully) earn your fortune, you need to decide what your website is going to be about. With so many websites on the net today and with so many topics to choose from, how do you decide what the most lucrative one for you should be? To decide that, you will need to do a bit of research.
The first thing to consider when deciding what your money-making website will be about, is your interests. Your website should be about something that interests you—like a hobby of yours or something you are passionate about. For instance, you may be a total dog lover. In that case a dog-related website might suit you. Or perhaps you are an avid fisherman. How about a website about some aspect of fishing, like best places to find bass or making your own fishing lures?
Finding a topic that interests you will make your website more appealing on a day-to-day basis for you to build and spend time creating. And your own interest will definitely project to the visitors you hope to attract. Plus you will know more about your topic than if you picked some random subject, and you will be able to relay more knowledgeable information on to your visitors within the content of your website. And good content and information attracts more visitors.
Now that you may know what general topic your website will be about, you may need to gear your subject down to a particular aspect of that subject. Your website should not be overly general, like a website simply about ‘dogs’. You need to narrow your subject down into a more pointed feature about dogs—say ‘dog clothing’ or ‘dog rescues’ or even about a particular breed of dog. This will help you when you are setting up your keywords for the search engines to find. If your topic is just about ‘dogs’ then you may have too much competition for that keyword as opposed to a keyword (phrase) like ‘dog clothing’.
Before making your final decision about what your website is to be about, you will need to research your topic. You need to find out if there are any people who are interested in your subject and how many potential visitors you may expect to have. It is fine to have a website topic you are interested in and which you have narrowed down to a particular topic, say like ‘clipping dog’s toenails’, but are there enough other people out there that have the same interest? The more people who have an interest in your topic relate to more visits to your website and more money-making opportunities.
Start your research by selecting keywords about your topic and plugging them into a keyword tool like Yahoo’s or Google’s keyword tools. Wordtracker also offers a good keyword tool to help you with your research efforts. These tools give you the estimated amount of traffic you can expect when someone clicks on the keyword you choose. This will give you a good idea of how well that topic will do on the web. Of course the more times the keyword is searched the better, but you do not want to be in competition with too general a keyword either. The bigger companies will have the general keywords, like ‘dogs’ or ‘travel’ for example, locked up.
Choosing a topic for your new website should not be difficult. Everyone has an interest in something, and everyone knows at least a little about many different subjects. Explore your life and find out what you know about. Perhaps you are a whiz at organizing or scheduling—you can create a website around that topic. Maybe you coach your son’s little league baseball team—what about a website about coaching methods for the small fry? You may just be good at fixing supper—how about a recipe advice website? Or do you like to read romance novels? You could have a unique website about romance and offer novels for sale.
There are so many subjects that could attract people to a website. Choose one, narrow down your subject and research how much traffic you could expect to receive. Then get going…the web is ripe for new websites…and you could be on your way to making your living from the web.
