Hosting Your Website
Let’s say you have a great idea for a fantastic website that you are sure is going to make you a ton of money. You have invested the time and resources into creating a great looking and what you hope to be an income-generating website that is dynamite. You have registered your domain name, set up all your product links and payment devices and are super-charged and ready to go. What you need now is a web hosting service to host your website.
A web hosting service allows you as an individual or organization the ability to have your website become accessible on the World Wide Web. They are companies that provide space on a server that provides internet connectivity, typically via a data center. The scope of these hosting services can vary widely. A basic web page or small-scale file hosting can be uploaded ‘as is’ via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) or a web interface. For personal web sites, this is typically a free service, but for business purposes there is usually a charge.
There are free web hosting services but these are usually advertisement-supported and limited in comparison to paid hosting. There are shared web hosting services where your website is placed on the same server as many other sites and you all share a common pool of server resources. There are also reseller web hosting which allows clients to become web hosts themselves. There are virtual dedicated servers which divide a server into virtual servers and although each user feels like they have their own dedicated service, actually they share it with many other users, but each with access to his own space. There are dedicated hosting services where the user has full control over his own web server, but he does not typically own the server used. There are also managed hosting services where the user gets his own web server but is not allowed full control over it. There are also co-location web hosting services which are similar to dedicated web hosting but the user owns the server and the hosting company provides the physical space that the server takes up. There is clustered hosting, with multiple servers hosting the same content for better use of the resources, gird hosting which is a form of distributed hosting kind of like a grid composed of multiple nodes and home servers which typically consists of a single machine in a private residence.
You can turn to a web hosting service provider run by a local company, or you can have your website hosted via a hosting service on the web. There are advantages and disadvantages to both choices. The advantages of using a local company is the hands-on support you can get. These are typically smaller companies that provide space for your website on a larger server but they typically offer their customers great service and support.
A web-based hosting service can offer advantages as well. They can be very cost-friendly and easy to use. They typically may offer package deals where you may be able to register your domain name for free if your website is hosted with them. Some even offer website building tools and templates in exchange for your hosting business.
When you are looking for a hosting service for your website, do your homework and shop around for the features that are right for you and your web business. Compare the prices and the level of service you may need. Web hosting needn’t be expensive and typically runs from $5.95 per month and up.
